Morgan DeWeese Week 1 in Dublin

Friday 5/31

On my flight over, I was sitting next to a phD student at Boston College. He is from Kildare, a county south of Dublin. He was very friendly, and told me that the Irish in general are too. I have definitely found this to be true, which honestly goes against what I was expecting. Most people tell me that Europeans, especially those in big cities, are a lot less friendly than people from the states. This is definitely not true. I would say that the Irish are much more friendly than people from Boston!

Saturday 6/1

Once my flight landed, I was brought to the dorm. There were four other Bucknell students on my flight, so we all arrived together. Here in Ireland, and much of Europe, the dorms are apartment style, which is definitely nice, because we all have our own room. Once we arrived, my roommates and I went shopping at Dundrum town center. This was definitely more of a trek than I am used to to get groceries. We were also not used to the buses, and learning how to navigate them while super tired after a red eye flight was not the best idea. We ended up getting on a bus going the wrong direction. Luckily we caught it after only a few stops and got off and turned around.

Sunday 6/2

On Sunday, we had orientation, and a campus tour. We got to see around campus, and learn about what university life might be like in Ireland. After the tour, I went back to the Dundrum town center to get some more groceries and a few house supplies. I am still getting used to shopping here, it seems like I will have to get groceries every few days, rather than once a week

Monday 6/3

On Monday, We had the first day of class. We also had our first group event, Epic, the Irish Emigration Museum. It was really cool to learn more about the history of Irish Emigration, and the different places that people went to. After the museum tour, we went out and explored the city, however, there wasn’t much open because it was a bank holiday.

Tuesday 6/4

My first day of the internship! I was really nervous about making it on time, so I left at 8:20 so that I could arrive early to explore the area and get a coffee. I had a really good coffee from a shop down the street. The internship was really cool. I am assigned to a team that is suing the Irish health system for medical negligence. Today, I just organized files, as there are over 200 clients they are representing. I got mostly caught up with the files, and so my supervisor said I could leave early. There is another intern at my company, so we went out and explored the city. We walked down the street and saw that the office is on the same street as the portal to NYC, so we stopped and looked into it a bit. After this we went and saw Trinity college. The campus is absolutely gorgeous. By this point we were starting to get tired, so we headed back to UCD.
