Lauren Joyce Week 2

Since last Wednesday I’ve quickly realized the fortunate truth that each week is better than the last!  Last Friday I was able to meet my supervisor which was great being able to put a face to the name. I feel as though as far as my internship goes I’ve definitely gotten into a routine and as my tasks become more intertwined with coworkers as time goes on, I better understand working together in a formal setting. What stands out most about what I’ve learned is communication so far and accountability. Navigating the balance between asking questions and working independently is something I’ve been working on, though will become easier as I become more familiar with the workplace.  Last week I wrote my first press release, met with a vendor for a Christmas event (so early!) and done a lot of work finding/ connecting influencers to the brands we work with, and then monitoring the coverage they post. I also worked on packaging and familiarizing myself with the different websites we use. Interestingly enough the company feels more publicity focus than I expected but I’ve always enjoyed writing so I’m excited to formalize that!

The ice cream trips have continued (Murphys might be my new favorite expenditure), as have the frequent trips to Mikeys. Next, its safe to say that my friends experience with infamous 39a has turned a new leaf. The yearning to secure the premium spot: front row top floor actually makes public transportation pretty fun. Also after work I’ve kept up with the shopping visits, though have yet to make any impulse purchases. Through this, I’ve really familiarized myself with the city, frequenting google maps less and less to easily identify myself as a wandering tourist. These experiences have really helped me not only feel comfortable in this, but with cities in general, and the independence they pressure. Without the crutch of a friend or mutual its forced me to lean into this. This definitely helps with my confidence thinking about living in a major city in just a few years, its not so bad!!

The weekend was super fun too! We went to Kilkenny which was just the cutest city, but also boasted an impressive CASTLE. I expected a gothic interior, but with all of its furniture being sold in the 20th century, its had to be recollected. However, it still painted a pretty cool picture and the history of the building itself was amazing. I can’t really fathom it being built in the 13th century. In town we went into a bookstore, some little shops and got food too, and my favorite: a chai latte. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was the best one I’ve had, though that seems to be a pattern with all of the food here. The landscape as we drove west reminded me of PA a bit, but then the crowds of sheep brought me back to reality. Lastly, yesterdays history museum was great too to learn about, knocking out misconceptions about vikings and St. Patrick. Afterwards we got burritos which was the perfect ending to the afternoon. I’m going to a Mt. Joy concert tomorrow, unexpected but I’m ecstatic. Class yesterday as well was really nice having an open discussion, it all felt participatory and interesting.
