Kayla Howie Week 5

Mamamia chapel!

Mamamia did I have a great weekend! Stella and I flew to Skiathos, Greece and spent the weekend in the two islands of Skiathos and Skopelos or as commonly referred to the Mamamia island because it’s where Mamamia was filmed. We trekked all the way up to the top of the hill to see the chapel where they filmed the wedding scene, and the whole experience was absolutely incredible! Let me take you along with us!

Thank you jetphotos.com for this wonderful action shot of EI-FAT

We fly a wonderful Aer Lingus flight (very lucky not cancelled because of the strike) with the plane lovingly landed EI-FAT which of course is a great way to start the trip. We land on Skiathos, an island you’d be surprised has an airport, but they only have one landing pad that goes in two directions for takeoff and landing. We enjoy the liveliness of the streets as there is a parade with people dressed in traditional Greek clothing and we hear music, and the alleys are filled with tables from local restaurants where people are socializing. We have a delicious dinner of squid (grilled and fried) and of course some tzatziki and head to bed to be up for the sunrise in the morning.

The best scallops I’ve ever had!

The morning brings adventures of leaving Skiathos to go to Skopelos by ferry and exploring the Mamamia island. We stand on top of the ferry and the wind blowing up warm salt water from below is a lovely welcome to the island. We continue our incredible seafood kick with some scallops and muscles as well as being sure to try authentic Greek food such as Moussaka (which is all mouthwatering of course).

One last early sunrise morning, we go to a beach for sunrise, and we are the only ones there, so we are fully able to take in the beauty, peace, and relaxation of the beach. It is a wonderful wrap to our time in Skopelos before returning to Skiathos for our flight back to Dublin.

I absolutely would love to go back to Greece again in the future with more time! The great thing about studying abroad in Europe is how cheap and easy it is to travel within the EU. There are a lot of budget airlines and affordable housing options everywhere! We also have some flexibility with the Bucknell in Dublin program to make our dream European trips come true! This weekend was certainly one I’ll never forget!!

I had a great weekend with you, Kayla! You have been such a great friend and Bucknell guide/mentor during these past few weeks; I can only hope to help younger Bucknellians like you one day.

Please know that I will always break down laughing every time I enter a plane, knowing that no plane is as iconic as EI-FAT
