Max Quan: Ireland Week 6

(The Giant’s Causeway)

Have you ever seen a grown man cry? Well I have. On the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, our tour guide teared up as he proudly told us about the legend of the Giant’s Causeway because his family had been recounting this story for generations. In short, the Irish Giant build a causeway over to the Scottish Giant to beat the living day lights out of him. However, he realized he was half the size of the Scottish Giant, and he was forced to run. The Scottish Giant followed him, but his wife pretended he was their baby. The Scottish Giant saw how large the baby was bolted back across the causeway while tearing it down behind them. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable. He told us both the stories and the science. Large rocks dotted the sea and formed multiple little coves. After rounding one of the coves, you could see the beautiful basalt pillars forming into the ocean. I have only seen basalt pillars on the home screens of my computer, and they may look better on there. Way too many people were sullying the basalt pillars with their presences, and it made it really difficult to take nice pictures. Overall, it is tied for the most beautiful place I have been so far.

(Hurling Semi Final Between Kilkenny and Claire)

I was wondering at first if watching hurling would be boring, but it was an electric experience. The crowd was rowdy and screaming their heads off. It was the semifinal game between Kilkenny and Claire. We were rooting for Claire, but that was because two gamblers had placed money on them (my friends Cole and Evan). I could be making that up, but they were talking about putting money on the game. Regardless, it was an amazing game. Claire trailed the majority of the game. They would go down by six then rally to make the game a two point difference. This continued far into the second half. Finally in the last few minutes, Claire tied the game up. The Claire fans erupted into incoherent screaming. In the last minute, Claire goes up by one to close out the game with a win. The Kilkenny fans behind us were devastated as the man in the Claire hat has dancing in their faces. I wish we could go to the finals, but unfortunately, we will be in Amsterdam.

(Walking Across the Carrick-a-Rede in Northern Ireland)

When walking across the Carrick-A-Rede in Northern Ireland, the water was deep blue, fading into turquoise, into an emerald green. It was the type of color palate you see on the paint strips in Ace Hardware. It was surrounded by cliffs topped by green grass, and the rock formations were just as beautiful as the Cliffs of Moher except smaller. The bridge is nice, but it is somewhat short. However, laying on the soft grass staring across the Island was another peaceful Ireland moment. I wish we were able to go swimming, but honestly, the water is freezing. If there is a recommendation, I would make or an addition to the Itinerary, it would be to go cliff jumping.

(Satay-sfying Bowl from Sprout)

FOOD TIME!!! As promised, my co-workers and I ate sprout again. We all got different bowls than last time, and it was totally worth it. The satay bowl was by far my favorite bowl. I do think these bowls could use more sauce to add more bold flavors, but it was peanut-y and salty. It was delicious. I would recommend adding additional sauce but for an extra euro, its somewhat a scam. Greedy I might say. But I love the peanut flavor. I have been eating peanut butter toast nearly every day. I am still trying to find a large jar of peanut butter because the Europeans only small sell micro-jars. I could devour those in a day, but I exercise self control. If there are any recommendations to where I could buy a large jar of peanut butter, preferably crunchy (however I recognize beggars cannot be chooser), I would be forever grateful.

Great post Max, I did in fact make a few euro off a Clare win!
I personally think it would be quite scary to jump off the bridge, but I like your insight.
I love learning about different food spots around Dublin, I will be sure to to add Sprout to my list, thanks for the recommendation!
