Evan Miserendino Week 8 Blog: The Free Weekend

I actually can not believe that it is the last week. This has been the first summer in all my 21 years, where I spent more time in Europe than in the United States. From finishing up finals on May 9, to July 23, the date I am writing this final blog, I have spent a total of 68 days in various European countries and only 7 days in the United States. The experiences and people that I have met along this journey have permanently changed my ideologies and identity. Greece, Ireland, and the Netherlands, the countries I traveled to this summer, all have varying cultures. Immersing myself into these different societies has broadened my world view. Along this expedition, I have befriended a group of kindhearted, intelligent, and charismatic Bucknellians. The past eight weeks, I have made amazing memories with these students that will last a life time. Summer 2024 has truly been the best summer of my life.

Originally, I was planning on meeting my mom in London during our free weekend. However, a group of students on the program scheduled a trip to Amsterdam. The city’s lively atmosphere, charming neighborhoods, and rich history make it a must-visit European city. I do miss my family. However, I could not pass up on an opportunity to visit this enticing destination.

Amsterdam Day 1

I refused to let the exhaustion from my 6:00 am flight hinder my first day. Fueled by two coffees and a lust for exploration, I embarked on my first mission: walking around the Jordaan. This district I found to be quite a charming neighborhood. There were many narrow streets, picturesque canals, and historic buildings, such as the Anne Frank House. Bikes, the tram, and two seat electric vehicles called a Canta, are the main modes of transportation in the city. Without any gas powered vehicles, there is little noise pollution. As a result, Amsterdam is an extremely quite place. At night, my group took a canal tour via Captain Jack Boat Tours. Our tour guide and boat driver, Oliver, guided us through the canals. He explained in depth to us about some of Amsterdam’s history.

Amsterdam Day 2

I am an avid house music and EDM fan. This past year I have picked up DJing as a hobby. I find mixing to be therapeutic and an enjoyable activity to do while out partying with friends. Touring Our House: The EDM Museum in Amsterdam was thrilling. This museum is dedicated to the history and culture of electronic dance music. It offers interactive exhibits and engaging multimedia presentations that highlight the genre’s evolution and global impact. Visitors can explore the roots of EDM while learning about influential artists and technological advancements in the industry.

Amsterdam Day 3

The Heineken Experience in Amsterdam is a dynamic tour located in the original Heineken brewery, which was established in 1867. This historic site has been transformed into an interactive museum where I learned about the brewery’s rich history and the beer-making process. The tour includes multimedia exhibits and engaging displays that illustrate Heineken’s global brand evolution. In Ireland they say Sláinte! In the Netherlands, it is Proost!

Amsterdam Day 4

The final day was spent wandering around near Vondelpark. Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s most famous and largest urban park in the heart of the city. The park features many scenic pathways, beautiful ponds, and vibrant flower gardens. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. I was able to find a nearby market to purchase some fruits and cheeses. While in the park, I found a peaceful spot by a pond to indulge in my treats and give my mom a phone call. I can not thank my family enough for allowing me to participate in this program abroad. They sacrificed so much for my sister and I in order to provide us with the best life opportunities. I am so unequivocally grateful for that.

Sounds like you had an amazing time Evan! You definitely made the best of the trip! Super jealous of the EDM museum, going to have to add that to the bucket list for next time.
