Lauren Gillaspy: Week 1 Dublin Blog

As I come close to finishing my first of eight weeks in Dublin, Ireland, I have taken time to reflect on everything that I have experienced so far on this amazing trip. Although I have only been in Dublin for five days, I have learned a lot about myself through my internship and my experience being alone in a different country. These experiences have changed my thinking and perspective while also making a huge personal impact on me.
It may sound crazy to hear that I have completely changed as a person from spending five days in Ireland, but it is certainly true. This experience has honestly been one of the best and most memorable things I have ever done. I have learned that I absolutely love the city, which is surprising since I grew up in Central Pennsylvania. I thrive in a fast paced environment and love being surrounded by people that work hard. Now that I have figured out how to use the bus, I feel as though I can conquer the world. I have gained a sort of confidence I never would have thought I could have, which certainly does not help my ego. I have made friendships that I will have forever. We have a bond that will last a lifetime because we are all going through this chaotic chapter of our lives together. I have learned that it is important to stay grounded and continue doing things that you are passionate about. I was scared that I would lose all of my interests when I came to a different country, but I made sure to continue doing the things that make me happy so that I don’t lose my spark. I have gone to a hot yoga class, which I very much enjoyed, and made me feel like I was at home. I have continued to read, and never pass on an opportunity to go shopping.
I am very grateful for my internship experience so far. It has taught me that I can thrive in any work environment that has good people. My co-workers and supervisors have been nothing but helpful, respectful, and fun. They take the time to get to know me and tell me about their personal lives. Everyone is always willing to help, even if they are busy. This internship has given me confidence in my knowledge and work. I find myself getting excited for the little things such as dressing up for the day, having my own desk and computers, getting my own email, and my favorite- dress down days!
Like I said, I have only been here for five days, but I have managed top learn so much in such a short amount of time about myself and the real world. I am beyond excited to see what the rest of this trip will bring me.
