Lauren Joyce Week 1

It’s hard to believe that I have only been in Dublin for such a short amount of time since so much could be shared! The shock of being in another country didn’t hit until I was at the airport, though having a few other Bucknell students on my flight made things much easier. My introduction to the country has largely revolved around exploring much of it through public transportation which differs vastly from both rural PA and Massachusetts. Learning more about it though has been super fun and help from locals has helped me to realize differences in cultures. The friendliness here has been overwhelming simply from the restaurants, shops and even at the bus stops myself and my friends have been to. I’ve noticed a general, genuine curiosity in our group from locals that been a stark difference from some American cities. As for the last few days, on Sunday after the orientation and UCD tour we went to Blackrock during low tide. Here, we found broad crowds expanded across the sand, taking advantage of the nice weather. Next, going to the store for groceries involved using the bus, LUAS, DART, and Free Now. Honestly, it was so extensive because we went the wrong way the inherent freedom of the day itself. This proved to be a huge relief from the stress I had before arrival, motivated by rushed packing and uncertainty. On Monday we had an introductory class that briefly mentioned marketing, and so I’m excited to tie that to my internship, being a marketing and publicity agency. Tuesday was the first day of my internship which was much more laid-back than I expected it to be. I felt prepared but a little overdressed, which is probably a good thing for the first day. All of my co-workers are girls in their early twenties so I’m very excited to get to know them more! So far everyone’s seemed eager to get to know me and the work environment feels stress-free, collaborative, and productive. After work, I walked around popping into a few different thrift stores which were consistently impressive, fully stacked with clothes that made buying a new but unnecessary wardrobe a difficult decision. Throughout the day I became more comfortable and independent which I’m looking forward to leaning into more. Also after hearing a ton about the unfortunate weather I’d have to put up with, it’s actually been super nice outside and barely rained at all which is a nice plus. Walking around the city without plan has led to ice cream trips and long extensive walks, the spontaneity a big relief from the structure of college classes and a full schedule. The length of the day itself pairs perfectly with the option and openness to have flexibility in our free time. Looking ahead to the next 2 months I can tell I’ll form some great friendships and work relationships. I’m anticipating the frantic stress of a new work environment to settle down too and I can start getting into routines. I also have to run each morning, for the next cross country season at Bucknell, but it’s been a nice way to get to know the area.
