Lauren Joyce Week 3

Reflecting on this last week, I’d say I’m fortunate to feel overwhelmed with how much I have to share. Last Wednesday I saw Mt. Joy which was one of the best concerts I’ve been to, which had a more intimate vibe compared to TD Garden or Gillette. Instead, it was in Olympia Threatre from the 19th century with amazing architecture and a smaller capacity of just over a thousand people. During the concert, Cassidy Jenna and I talked to some kids from Ireland which was such a cool experience. The whole crowd just bonded over the love of their music. Also, I think this concert had the least amount of phones recording out of other concerts, which may be the nature of the music but also the fact that everyone was just living in the moment and filming it was an afterthought. I’ll choose to believe that. Cassidy tells this story best but after DMing a few band members we ended up JOINING THEM at a pub which was actually so surreal. I couldn’t sleep I was so excited.

As for my internship, I feel like I’ve learned so much. I work making up coverage reports for print (digital and media) as well as on social media, summarizing for our different client brands. I make up press packs that are gifted to different influencers and people in the media and help plan for different upcoming brand events and launches. Throughout this, I attend meetings too which helps solidify a more tangible understanding of what my coworkers do. A lot of the work entails emailing and maintaining relations with different people making up the publicity side of the company. Through this, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of asking for clarification and communicating often in the workplace, which becomes increasingly relevant.

Over the weekend we left on Friday for the Cliffs of Moher, a picturesque spot that finally became realized. Although it was definitely tourist central, the views were crazy good. That evening we drove to Galway which was equally as impressive, especially by the water. You’d almost mistake the turquoise water for somewhere tropical, though I still haven’t worn half of the summery clothes I brought over. Galway itself was smaller than I expected, the concentration of shops, restaurants and pubs reminding me of Kilkenny instead. I wish I had spoken to locals more to better grasp cultural differences, if any, though as a group we often spoke to other college kids studying abroad. Something that surprised me this weekend was the scenery at Kylemore Abbey, whose surrounding mountains reminded me of the Tetons in Wyoming obviously to scale but just as rocky. Lastly, the sheep farm reminded me of the stark contrast between an urban Dublin and the majority rest of the country. The weeks are flying by, but I’ve grown to love a lot of the relationships I’ve formed and memories I’ve made! I’ve made a point to get to know a lot of people which has been so fun.
